Biography of Patricia Dunn
Patricia Cecile Dunn was born on March 27, 1953, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 with a degree in Journalism and Economics.
Career at Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors
In 1976, Dunn started working as a part-time secretary at Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors. She quickly rose through the ranks and became the president of the company in 1994.
Barclays Global Investors
In late 1995, Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors, which was one of the largest companies in the US, was acquired by Barclays PLC of London and renamed Barclays Global Investors. Dunn became the executive director of Barclays Global Investors and the deputy chairman of the board of directors. In 1998, she also became the chairman of the board of directors.
Hewlett-Packard
In 1998, Dunn became a member of the board of directors of Hewlett-Packard. In February 2005, she was elected non-executive chairman of the board of directors. In January 2006, Dunn initiated an internal investigation into the leakage of information from the board of directors' meeting, which led to the identification of a director, George Keyworth, as the source of the leak.
Health Issues and Resignation
Dunn faced health challenges during her career. In 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in 2002, she was diagnosed with melanoma. In June 2002, she stepped down from her role as executive director of Barclays Global Investors but retained her position as the deputy chairman of the board of directors. Reports vary as to whether her departure was due to her illness or her failed attempt to buy out Barclays Global Investors and release it from the control of Barclays PLC of London. In 2004, Dunn was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Controversies and Resignation from Hewlett-Packard
In February 2005, Dunn was elected non-executive chairman of the board of directors of Hewlett-Packard. In May 2006, she publicly accused director George Keyworth of being the source of leaked information. Later that year, it was revealed that Dunn's hired security experts had used illegal methods, impersonating board members, employees, or journalists to obtain information about phone calls made by individuals under investigation. Investigations into these incidents began, and it was announced that Dunn would leave her position at Hewlett-Packard in January 2007. However, she resigned in September 2006.
Personal Life
Dunn is married to William Jahnke, the former president of Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors, who had four children before their marriage.
