Patrick Brontë: An Anglican Cleric and Literary Father
Patrick Brontë was an Anglican priest, teacher, and writer who is best known as the father of the renowned Yorkshire novelists Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë.
Early Life and Family
Patrick was born into a large family as the eldest of 10 siblings. His parents, who originally bore the surname Brunty, altered it to Brontë when Patrick was an adult. He lived a long life, passing away at the age of 84.
Marriage and Children
Patrick was married to Maria Branwell (1783-1821) in 1812. Together, they had six children, all of whom predeceased him. The last of his children, Charlotte, died in 1855 at the age of 38, six years before his own passing.
Ancestry and Legacy
Patrick's surname, Brontë, was not his family's original name. It was altered from Brunty during Patrick's youth. One possible reason for this change was the Duke of Bronte (Bronte) title bestowed upon Admiral Nelson in 1799.
