Early Life and Military Service
Born in 1922, Pyotr Makarov was a member of the 511th Separate Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment during World War II. Initially serving in the bombing aviation, he soon transferred to the reconnaissance unit and flew on the Pe-2 aircraft.
Valiant Service in the Reconnaissance Unit
On August 5, 1943, Makarov, as a radio operator, detected nine Messerschmitts and used his machine gun to disrupt their attack. A few days later, he engaged in combat with a Heinkel-111 and inflicted damage. On February 6, 1944, he shot down an enemy fighter and alerted his pilot to intense anti-aircraft fire.
Makarov assisted the navigator in reconnaissance missions, providing valuable information. His contributions included spotting a convoy of up to 50 vehicles on June 3, 1944, and discovering multiple trains and aircraft at enemy bases.
Awards and Recognition
For his bravery and accuracy in reporting reconnaissance data, Makarov received the Order of Glory, 3rd Class, after 22 combat missions. In August 1944, he was awarded the Order of Glory, 2nd Class, for his exceptional performance.
In late 1944, Makarov was nominated for the Order of Glory, 1st Class, for his consistent success in reconnaissance missions. He flew over 78 combat missions without sustaining any injuries or having his aircraft shot down.
Post-War Life
After his honorable discharge in 1946, Makarov worked in the development of oil fields in the Kuibyshev region. He later contributed to the cultivation of virgin lands in Kazakhstan before settling in the Saratov region and finding employment in a woodworking facility.
