Biography of Piotr Jaroszewicz

Piotr Jaroszewicz was a Polish communist and state official. He served as the Prime Minister of Poland from 1970 to 1980. Born on October 8th in the city of Nesvizh, Russian Empire, he started working as a teacher in Garwolin after completing his secondary school education in Jasło.

Life during World War II

With the outbreak of World War II between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, Jaroszewicz moved to the Soviet-occupied zone of Poland. He became the director of a gymnasium in Pinsk. In July 1940, he was deported to Slobodka, Krasnoborsky District, Archangelsk, along with his first wife Oksana Gregorievna and their daughter Olga.

Political and Military Career

In 1943, Jaroszewicz joined the 1st Polish Army under the command of General Zygmunt Berling. A year later, he joined the Polish Workers' Party and rose to the position of deputy commander of the 1st Army. After the war, he became the deputy minister of defense from 1945 to 1950. From 1956, he represented Poland in the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON). He also served as the deputy prime minister of Poland from 1952 to 1970 and briefly held the position of Minister of Mining Economy from 1954 to 1956.

Political Challenges and Departure

Jaroszewicz was a member of the Central Committee (CC) of the Polish United Workers' Party (PUWP) since its creation in 1948 and a member of the Political Bureau since 1964. From December 1970 to February 1980, he served as the Prime Minister of Poland. However, his economic policies, along with those of Edward Gierek, sparked protests in 1976 and 1980. After the failure to suppress the "Solidarity" movement in 1980, Jaroszewicz resigned from his post and was expelled from the party.

Mysterious Death

On September 1st, 1992, Piotr Jaroszewicz and his second wife, Alicja Solska, were found dead under mysterious circumstances in their home in Anin, near Warsaw. The fate of his first wife and daughter remains unknown. The murder of Jaroszewicz, along with the cases of Marek Papala and Stanisław Bułak-Bałachowicz, remains one of the biggest mysteries in modern Poland. In 2009, Henryk Skwarczyński wrote a book about Jaroszewicz's murder titled "Jak zabiłem Piotra Jaroszewicza" ("How I Killed Piotr Jaroszewicz").
