Giovanni Battista Vartal
Giovanni Battista Vartal (dates unknown) was a French operatic tenor and vocal teacher. He was a soloist at the Paris Opera from 1831 onwards.
Vartal as a Performer
Vartal is renowned for being the first performer of the role of Don Gaspar in Donizetti's "La Favorite." He also premiered several works by Hector Berlioz, among others.
Vartal as a Teacher
Maria Bashkirtseva's diary entry from July 14, 1876, records her audition with Vartal, whom she described as "the First Professor of Paris." He taught numerous other singers, including Alexandra Krutykova, Christina Nilsson, and Zelia Trebelli.

Vartal's wife, Thérèse Vartal, was a renowned pianist, composer, and musicologist.
