Early Life and Activism
Ram Kumari Jhakri, a prominent Nepali politician and social activist, was born into an indigenous family and has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of marginalized communities.
Student Union Leadership
As a student leader, Jhakri became the first woman president of the All Nepal National Free Students' Union (ANNFSU), a student union affiliated with a major political party. Her tenure as president marked her as a central figure in the 2006 Nepalese democratic movement, where she led student protests demanding political reforms.
Entry into Politics
Elected to the House of Representatives in 2017 from the indigenous constituency, Jhakri initially represented the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). After the party's merger with the Maoists to form the Nepal Communist Party, and its subsequent dissolution and split, she joined the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist).
Cabinet Position
In 2021, Jhakri was appointed Minister of Urban Development in the Sher Bahadur Deuba government. This marked her first cabinet position and has further elevated her profile in Nepalese politics.
Criticism of Government Policies
Known for her outspoken nature, Jhakri has been critical of certain government policies and leaders. In 2019, she publicly criticized the government's fiscal plan and the Prime Minister's leadership, earning her both praise and condemnation.
