Early Life and Education
Ramón Grau San Martín was born into a merchant family in Cuba. He pursued a degree in physiology, graduating from the medical faculty of the University of Havana.
Academic Career and Political Activism
In 1921, Grau San Martín joined the faculty of the University of Havana as a professor of physiology. Around this time, he became actively involved in opposition to the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado.
Rise to Power and Presidency
In September 1933, Grau San Martín assumed the leadership of a temporary revolutionary government in Cuba. In 1934, he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party ("Auténtico"). Elected president in 1944, Grau San Martín initially implemented progressive reforms. However, his policies became more conservative after World War II.
Later Life and Legacy
From 1952 to 1958, Grau San Martín led the right-wing faction of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and opposed the government of Fulgencio Batista. He retired from politics in 1959. Beyond his political career, Grau San Martín authored historical and political works, including "The Cuban Revolution in the Face of America" (1936), and published several papers on physiology.
