Rebecca Harms: A Green Pioneer in European Politics and Documentary Filmmaking
Rebecca Harms, a German politician and documentary filmmaker, is a prominent figure in European Green politics.
Early Career and Activism
Harms studied forestry and worked in reforestation and afforestation. In 1997, she co-founded a civil movement opposing the storage of nuclear waste in Gorleben. She also served as an assistant to Undine von Blottnitz in the European Parliament from 1984-1994.
Documentary Filmmaking
From 1988-1994, Harms collaborated with the Wendland Film Cooperative on a series of documentary films. These films focused on environmental and social issues.
Political Ascent
In 1994, Harms was elected to the Lower Saxon state parliament and became its Green Party faction leader in 1998. Energy policy was always a key focus for her.
European Parliament and Green Leadership
Since 2004, Harms has served as a Member of the European Parliament, continuing to advocate for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and against nuclear power. She is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy, as well as the Committee on Parliamentary Cooperation with Ukraine and the Subcommittee on Environment.
Harms is a member of the Alliance 90/The Greens' political council and co-chair of the Greens-European Free Alliance group in the European Parliament with Daniel Cohn-Bendit.
Support for Ukraine and Recognition
In 2013, Harms visited Kyiv to support the Euromaidan protests. She received the 25 Years of Independence of Ukraine Jubilee Medal in 2016 for her contributions to Ukraine's international standing and promotion of its heritage.
