Biography of Roland Mouret
Roland Mouret is a French fashion designer and the creator of the famous Galaxy Dress. Born on August 27, 1962, in Lourdes, France, Mouret currently lives and works in London, where he manages his own atelier under the brand name 'RM'.

Early Career
Mouret's career began in 1979 when he enrolled in a fashion design program at a university in Paris. However, he quickly dropped out, taking to heart the words of his mentor, who emphasized the importance of life experience in their craft. He worked as a model and stylist, including for the French edition of 'Elle' magazine, where he learned fabric cutting, and for 'Glamour' magazine. It was in Paris that he met Jean Paul Gaultier and landed a job working on an upcoming menswear show.
Rise to Fame
At the start of his independent career, Mouret developed an approach that highly valued simplicity, sensuality, and an understanding of the female figure. In 1994, he moved to London and worked for the label 'People Corporation'. Although the brand had a short lifespan, Mouret's work was well-received, giving him the confidence to start his own eponymous label.
In February 1998, Mouret presented his first collection at London Fashion Week. The collection was entirely handmade, with no patterns used. The designer aimed to showcase the beauty of the female form, constructing the entire collection through folds and drapes held together by buttons and pins. This work received high praise from critics, and the avant-garde designer appeared on the cover of 'Collezioni' magazine, a prestigious honor for a budding designer.
Establishment and Success
In 2000, Mouret partnered with Sharai and Andre Meyers, leading to the establishment of 'Roland Mouret Designs Ltd'. By 2004, Mouret had become a trendsetter in demi-couture, creating ready-to-wear clothing with the essence of high fashion. He began showcasing his collections in New York City, where his clothing, known for its draping and impeccable tailoring, became extremely popular.
In 2005, after five years of collaboration, Mouret left the company despite the success of the spring collection, which reached sales of nearly $1.8 million. Nonetheless, he was grateful for the experience, as it allowed him to work on his own designs and learn the intricacies of running a business without the burden of sole responsibility.
The Galaxy Dress and Continued Success
In the spring of 2006, Mouret introduced the world to the dress now known as the Galaxy Dress. It quickly became a favorite among thousands of buyers on both sides of the Atlantic and gained popularity among numerous celebrities, including Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore, Rachel Weisz, Scarlett Johansson, and Victoria Beckham. The dress was hailed as the 'dress of the season' by 'The Daily Telegraph'. Mouret revealed that he was inspired by stars with figures like Scarlett Johansson and Dita Von Teese.
In September 2006, Mouret joined forces with new investor Simon Fuller of '19 Entertainment' and began working under the name 'RM by Roland Mouret'. Since then, he has delighted buyers every year with new collections that sell out straight from the runway, earning enthusiastic reviews. In the spring of 2009, Mouret triumphantly returned to the ready-to-wear market and added a menswear line in January 2010. Additionally, in 2011, the designer plans to open his first flagship store in central London.
