Early Life and Education
Roman Bessmertnyi was born on November 15, 1965, in the village of Motyzhyn, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. He graduated from the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute and became a history teacher.
Political Career
In 1994, Bessmertnyi was elected as a people's deputy. From 1997 to 2002, he served as a representative of President Leonid Kuchma in the Verkhovna Rada. In 1998, he became a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada III under the list of the People's Democratic Party.
Collaboration with Viktor Yushchenko
In 2001, while remaining a representative of the president in parliament, Bessmertnyi began collaborating with the dismissed Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko. In April 2002, he resigned as the president's permanent representative in the Verkhovna Rada.
2004 Presidential Elections
Bessmertnyi played a key role in the 2004 presidential elections. He became the deputy head of Yushchenko's electoral staff and the commandant of the public disobedience protests on Maidan Nezalezhnosti during the "Orange Revolution."
Government of Yulia Tymoshenko
After the "Orange Revolution," Bessmertnyi became the Vice Prime Minister for Administrative and Territorial Reform in the government of Yulia Tymoshenko. However, he strongly opposed her appointment, leading to his nickname "Roman with a Stone." Bessmertnyi resigned in November 2005 to dedicate himself to party affairs.
Government of Yuriy Yekhanurov
In September 2005, Bessmertnyi briefly served as the Vice Prime Minister for Regional Policy in the government of Yuriy Yekhanurov.
Leadership of Nasha Ukraina
Bessmertnyi was elected the leader of the "Nasha Ukraina" faction in the Verkhovna Rada in 2006, but resigned under pressure from the party's new leadership.
Presidency of Viktor Yushchenko
In 2007, Bessmertnyi was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Presidential Secretariat, where he focused on information policy. He also became the Chairman of the Council of the People's Union "Nasha Ukraina" in 2005.
Ambassadorship to Belarus
On February 24, 2010, Bessmertnyi was appointed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus.
Conflict in Eastern Ukraine
From 2014 to 2016, Bessmertnyi served as Ukraine's representative in the tripartite contact group for the settlement of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.
