Early Life and Education
Rysspek Akmatbayev was born on July 6, 1960, in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan. He graduated from the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, where he excelled as a master boxer.
Criminal Career
In the post-Soviet era, Akmatbayev emerged as a powerful crime boss in Kyrgyzstan, leading one of the most influential organized crime groups. He was known as the "Kyrgyz Robin Hood" and the "Godfather of Issyk-Kul." Despite being twice convicted, he managed to evade significant prison time.
Philanthropy and Political Aspiration
Akmatbayev was actively involved in philanthropy and politics. He sponsored the construction of a memorial in Cholpon-Ata and ran for parliament, winning a seat in 2006. However, his political ambitions were cut short by his assassination.
Attempted Assassinations and Suspicions
Akmatbayev faced numerous assassination attempts. In 1996, he survived a grenade launcher attack, and in 2000, he was shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting. He was also suspected of involvement in a triple murder in 2001 and the deaths of his son and wife.
Public Redemption and Legal Victory
In 2005, Akmatbayev emerged from hiding and surrendered to the authorities. He denied all charges against him and successfully appealed his convictions. In 2006, he was acquitted by a court and elected to parliament, signaling a new chapter in his life.
Tragic Assassination
On May 10, 2006, Akmatbayev's life was tragically cut short when he was gunned down by assassins as he left a mosque. His death sent shockwaves through Kyrgyzstan, leaving behind a legacy of intrigue and unanswered questions.
