Samson Kemelmakher: A Versatile Singer-Songwriter

Samson Kemelmakher is a renowned singer-songwriter who has left an indelible mark on both Jewish and Russian music.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born in 1953 in Kalarash, Moldova, Kemelmakher's musical journey commenced at a young age. He completed his secondary education and attended music school in Chisinau.

Moldavian Music Scene

In the 1970s, Kemelmakher performed with a Moldavian gypsy ensemble. Subsequently, he joined the popular group Ecou, collaborating with renowned Moldavian composer Petre Teodorovich and accompanying singers such as Ion Suruceanu, Anastasia Lazariuc, and Filip Kirkorov.

Birth of "Idishe Lid"

In 1987, Kemelmakher established the Jewish folk group "Idishe Lid" under the direction of Ilya Bershadsky. As the group's lead vocalist, he embarked on tours throughout the Soviet Union.

"Main Lid - Main Lebm" and Beyond

In 1990, Kemelmakher and "Idishe Lid" released their debut album, "Main Lid - Main Lebm" (My Song - My Life). The album, featuring Kemelmakher's original compositions, garnered widespread acclaim. Several songs have been covered by klezmer musicians worldwide, including Wolf Krakowski on his "Transmigrations" album, released by John Zorn's "Tzadik" label in 2001.

Relocation to Israel

In 1993, Kemelmakher immigrated to Israel, settling in Rishon Lezion and Ashdod. He re-released "Main Lid - Main Lebm" in an expanded edition and issued a new album of traditional and original Jewish songs, "Baerishe Fun Der Mame" (From Mother's Inheritance).

Dual-Language Album and Russian Chanson

Kemelmakher's subsequent releases include a bilingual (Yiddish-Russian) album, "Main Shtetele Beltz" (My Hometown Beltz), and three compact discs of original Russian chanson songs.
