Early Career and Move to Germany
Shaun Bartlett is a South African footballer who began his career in his home country, playing for various clubs before joining the German side Stuttgarter Kickers in 1992. He spent the 1994/1995 season on loan at Ditzingen before being acquired by Karlsruher SC, a Bundesliga team.
Prolific Goalscorer in Karlsruhe
Bartlett established himself as one of the league's top scorers, netting 16 goals in the 1995/1996 season and an impressive 17 in the following campaign. Seeking recognition on the international stage, he acquired German citizenship, hoping to be called up to the national team, but only earned caps for the reserve squad.
Unsuccessful Transfer to Liverpool
In 1998, Bartlett made a high-profile move to Liverpool, but his tenure with the English club proved to be a major disappointment. Many fans consider him one of the club's worst signings, nicknaming him "possibly the worst player to ever wear a Liverpool shirt." Upon signing, Bartlett had boldly claimed through the press that he was "as quick as Michael Owen," a statement that proved far from accurate.
Return to Germany and Later Career
In 1999, Bartlett returned to Germany, joining Stuttgart. He also had a brief stint in Austria with FC Austria Wien during the 2003/2004 season before returning to Karlsruher SC. In the later years of his career, he played for Kickers Offenbach and Stuttgarter Kickers once more before concluding his professional journey with AmaZulu in South Africa from August 2008.
