Simon Doonan: A Style Icon and Creative Force
Early Life and CareerSimon Doonan was born in 1952 in Reading, England. His first foray into retail came as a summer student at the Reading department store Heelas. After graduating from university, Doonan returned to Heelas, where he discovered the art of window dressing.
Fashion Designer and Savile Row
Doonan ventured to London, where he worked as a window designer for Aquascutum. He then opened his own store, Nutters of Savile Row, in London's bustling fashion district.
Window Decorator in Los Angeles and New York
In 1978, Doonan moved to the United States, where he was invited to design window displays for the Los Angeles department store Maxfield. In 1986, he joined Barneys New York as their window display director.
Style Columnist and Author
In addition to his window dressing duties at Barneys, Doonan penned a style column for the New York Observer. His book "Eccentric Glamour" condemned the pervasiveness of "porno chic" in Western society.
Television Appearances and Personal Life
Doonan has made appearances on VH1's "I Love the New Millennium" and "America's Next Top Model." He is openly gay and married his long-time partner, designer Jonathan Adler, in 2008. His memoir, "Beautiful People," was adapted into a BBC Two television series in 2008.
