Early Life and Education

Simon Sebag Montefiore is a British journalist and historian born into a prominent family. His father, Stephen Erik Sebag-Montefiore, was a doctor and the great-great-grandson of Sir Moses Montefiore, a well-known philanthropist. His mother, Phyllis April Jaffée, was a writer. Montefiore received his historical education at the University of Cambridge.

Journalism Career

Before pursuing history, Montefiore worked as an investment banker. In the 1990s, he transitioned to journalism, traveling extensively throughout the former USSR and contributing to publications such as the Sunday Times, New York Times, The New Republic, and Spectator.

Historical Writing

In 2000, Montefiore published "Potemkin: Catherine the Great's Imperial Partner," a biography of Grigory Potemkin, the powerful lover and confidant of Catherine the Great. The book received critical acclaim and became a bestseller.

Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar

In 2004, Montefiore's highly anticipated book "Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar" was released. It chronicled Stalin's reign and won the "British Book Awards" for Best Historical Book of the Year.
