Early Life and Education
Sirpa Paatero was born on September 9, 1964 in Karhula, now a district of Kotka, Finland. She graduated high school in Kotka in 1984 and went on to earn vocational degrees in fashion design and handbag making. In 1992, she studied at the University of Helsinki and later took courses in substance abuse management and social work.
Political Career
Member of Parliament (2006-Present)Paatero was elected to the Finnish Parliament, or Eduskunta, in 2006, representing the Kimi constituency as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Finland. She has served in this role continuously since then.
Government Service (2014-Present)
In 2014, Paatero became Minister for International Development in the Cabinet of Alexander Stubb, a position she held until 2019. From 2019 to 2020, she served as Minister for Local Government and Ownership Steering in the Cabinet of Antti Rinne.
Minister of Local Government (2019-Present)
Following the resignation of Antti Rinne, Paatero was appointed Minister of Local Government in the Cabinet of Sanna Marin on December 10, 2019. She held this position during the 2020 postal strike, which led to her resignation on November 29, 2020. However, Paatero was reappointed as Minister of Local Government in the Cabinet of Sanna Marin on December 10, 2019.
Other Positions
From 2011 to 2014, Paatero was First Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Group of the Social Democratic Party. Her other roles have included working as an instructor for hobbies and studying child sexual abuse.
