Early Life and Military Service
Stepan Shahaida was born on December 28, 1895, in the village of Biloholovy, now in the Ternopil Oblast of Ukraine. During the Russian Civil War, he served in the Red Army from 1920 to 1922.
Theatrical Career
After his military service, Shahaida pursued a career in acting. In 1922, he joined the "Berezil" Theatre in Kyiv, where he studied under the renowned director Les Kurbas. In 1935, he moved to the Kharkiv Ukrainian Drama Theatre named after T.G. Shevchenko.
Film Career
Shahaida made his film debut in 1924 with the role of Hordiy Svyatoptitsyin in "Vendetta." From 1928 onward, he became an actor at the Odessa and Kyiv film studios. He starred in several films directed by Alexander Dovzhenko. In 1935, he published an article titled "My Work in 'Aerograd.'"
Political Persecution
In 1938, Shahaida was unjustly repressed by the Soviet authorities. He was arrested on October 19, 1937, and accused of being a "bourgeois nationalist" and counterrevolutionary. It is believed that his parents' move from Western Ukraine to Yugoslavia played a role in his persecution.
Tragic End
Several months after his arrest, Shahaida was executed by firing squad. His death came despite his popularity and his role as an onscreen hero who fought against "enemies of the people" in films such as "Aerograd."
Legacy
Shahaida's film and theatrical work continue to be admired by audiences. He is remembered as a talented actor who was unjustly taken from the world during the Stalinist era.
