Steve Coppola: American Rower and Olympic Hopeful

Steve Coppola is an American rower who represents the United States National Team in the men's eights discipline. Born in Buffalo, New York on May 18, 1984, Coppola currently resides in Princeton, New Jersey.

From Basketball to Rowing

During his high school years, Coppola initially pursued basketball. However, he later discovered his passion for rowing and decided to pursue it as a complementary sport to improve his overall fitness. It was during this time that Coppola realized his love for rowing and committed to continuing his training.

Princeton University and National Team

Coppola continued his rowing career at Princeton University. In his own words, "On my first day of college, my coach told me that if I wanted to be in the boat, I needed to weigh less than the boat." His hard work paid off, and Coppola became a member of Princeton's varsity eight, which placed second at the IRA National Championships in both 2005 and 2006.

In 2006, Coppola joined the U.S. National Team. He has competed in four World Championships and two National Championships during his time with the team. In 2004, he stepped onto the podium as part of the four-man squad with coxswain (a non-Olympic event). The following year, he earned a gold medal in the men's eight at the World Championships.

Olympic Debut in Beijing

Coppola will make his Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. He will compete as part of the men's eight team. Team USA hopes to replicate their success in Athens, where they won the gold medal.

Hobbies and Passions

Outside of rowing, Coppola enjoys fishing and hopes to go deep-sea fishing in Florida with his cousin after the Olympics. He holds a degree in psychology from Princeton University.
