Biography of Theodore Schultz

Theodore Schultz was an American economist known for his groundbreaking research on the role of human capital in economic development. He was born in Arlington, South Dakota and enrolled at South Dakota State College in 1921, where he studied agriculture and graduated in 1927. Schultz continued his education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, earning a doctorate in agricultural economics in 1930.

After completing his studies, Schultz joined the faculty at Iowa State College and taught there from 1930 to 1943. He then served as the head of the economics department at the University of Chicago from 1946 to 1961. In 1960, Schultz became the president of the American Economic Association.

Schultz's research focused on the role of agriculture in the economy, and he made significant contributions to the understanding of industrial policy in both developing and developed countries. He also advocated for investment in education, popularizing the concept of "educational capital." Schultz's work earned him the Nobel Prize in Economics, which he shared with British economist Arthur Lewis.

In addition to his work on economic development, Schultz examined the post-war recovery of Germany and Japan compared to the United Kingdom. He concluded that the success of the former was due to their investment in education and healthcare, which resulted in a healthy and educated workforce. Schultz argued that the development of a country's economy depended on the quality of its citizens.

Schultz's observations formed the basis of the theory of human capital, which inspired numerous economists, including Gary Becker, another Nobel laureate. Many countries reevaluated their approach to technical education based on Schultz's findings, leading to the implementation of educational programs supported by international economic organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Theodore Schultz passed away on February 26, 1998, in Evanston, Illinois at the age of 95. He was laid to rest in Badger, South Dakota.
