Thomas Vermaelen: A Belgian Football Legend

Early Career at Germinal Beerschot and Ajax

Thomas Vermaelen began his football journey at Germinal Beerschot in Belgium, where he nurtured his skills. In 2003, he made a significant move to Dutch giants Ajax, signing a five-year contract. Despite a debut in the Eredivisie in February 2004, Vermaelen faced stiff competition and was loaned to RKC Waalwijk in January 2005, where he gained valuable playing time.

Triumphs with Ajax

Upon returning to Ajax after his loan spell, Vermaelen became a regular starter, contributing to the team's Eredivisie title in 2003/04. He also claimed two Dutch Super Cups (2005, 2007) and two KNVB Cups (2006, 2007). During the 2007/08 season, he played a crucial role in Ajax's second-place finish in the league.

Arrival at Arsenal

In June 2009, Vermaelen attracted the attention of Arsenal, who were in need of defensive reinforcements. He signed a contract with the English club for an undisclosed fee, reportedly around £10-12 million. In his debut Premier League match, he scored a goal against Everton and was named to the BBC and Sky Sports Team of the Week. Vermaelen was voted Arsenal's Player of the Month for August and September and was included in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the season. After Robin van Persie's departure to Manchester United, Vermaelen was appointed Arsenal's captain.

Move to Barcelona

In August 2014, Vermaelen made a high-profile move to Barcelona for a fee of €19 million. However, injuries hampered his progress at the Spanish club, and he had to undergo an extended rehabilitation period. His official debut for Barcelona came in May 2015, and he scored his first goal for the club in August 2015. In August 2016, Vermaelen joined Italian club Roma on loan.

International Career

Vermaelen made his international debut for Belgium in 2006. He was part of the Red Devils' squads at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.

Personal Life

Vermaelen is in a relationship with British television presenter Polly Parsons, whom he met at a party hosted by Robin van Persie.
