Chikage Ogi: Japan's First Female Upper House Speaker
Early Life and CareerChikage Ogi, born Hiroko Nayashi, was a celebrated star of the all-female Takarazuka Revue. She used the stage name Chikage Ogi during her time in the theater.
Political Career
In 1977, Ogi transitioned to politics and joined the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). She became a member of the House of Representatives. In 1994, she left the LDP and served as leader of the Conservative Party from 2000 to 2001. Ogi held the position of Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories and Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport while representing the Conservative Party in the ruling coalition. She later rejoined the LDP in 2003.
Historic Appointment
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi nominated Ogi as the first female speaker of the Upper House of Parliament, known as the House of Councillors. Despite her advanced age, Ogi was a vibrant and experienced politician. She was elected in an extraordinary session of the Diet.
