Vadim Prystaiko: Ukrainian Diplomat and Politician
Early Life and EducationVadim Prystaiko, a Ukrainian political figure and diplomat, was born on February 20, 1970, in Kiliia, Ukraine. He graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1994 and the Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade in 1998, earning a master's degree.
Early Career
In his early career, Prystaiko held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade of Ukraine. From 1994 to 1997, he served as Chief Economist, Head of Department, and Deputy Head of the Trade and Economic Relations Department responsible for Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.
Diplomatic Career
Service in the Middle East and AsiaIn 1997, Prystaiko joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. He served as Deputy Head of the Department for Asia and the Pacific Region and Consul at the Consulate General of Ukraine in Sydney, Australia.
North American Diplomacy
From 2002 to 2006, Prystaiko served as Advisor on Political Affairs and Chargé d'Affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy in Canada. In 2009, he became Counselor-Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States.
Ambassador to Canada
In 2012, Prystaiko was appointed as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada and Representative of Ukraine to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Return to the Foreign Ministry
Deputy Foreign Minister and NATO ChiefIn 2014, Prystaiko returned to Ukraine and served as Deputy Foreign Minister, Head of the Apparatus. In 2017, he was appointed as Head of the Ukrainian Mission to NATO.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
On August 29, 2019, Prystaiko became the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in the government of Oleksiy Honcharuk.
Political Involvement
Role in the Verkhovna RadaIn 2019, President Volodymyr Zelensky nominated Prystaiko for the position of Foreign Minister, but his appointment was initially rejected by the Verkhovna Rada.
