Valon Behrami: Swiss Midfielder with Albanian Roots
Early Career in SwitzerlandValon Behrami is a Swiss footballer of Albanian descent who began his career at FC Stabio in Switzerland. After several years in the Swiss league, he joined Italian clubs Genoa and Udinese in 2003.
Breakout in Italy
In 2004, Genoa acquired Behrami's full rights from Udinese and loaned him to Verona. After a successful season at Verona, he was sold to Lazio in 2005.
Lazio and the English Chapter
Despite rumors of a move in January, Lazio president Claudio Lotito declared that Behrami would only be sold for €12 million. Behrami remained a key player for Lazio until signing a five-year contract with West Ham United in 2008.
Fiorentina and Watford
In 2011, Behrami moved to Italian club Fiorentina before joining Watford in 2015.
International Career
Behrami represented Switzerland at the youth level before earning his senior debut in 2005. An injury kept him out of two group stage matches at the 2006 World Cup, and he played only briefly in the third match. He also missed the Round of 16 defeat against Ukraine.
Club Honors
While playing for Napoli, Behrami won the Copa Italia in the 2013/14 season.
