Vo Van Thuong: A Biographical Sketch

Early Life and Education

Vo Van Thuong was born on December 13, 1970, in Hai Duong province, then a part of North Vietnam. His family relocated from the South due to the war. In 1988, Thuong enrolled in the Philosophy Department at the University of Ho Chi Minh City, graduating in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, specializing in Marxism-Leninism. He later earned a master's degree in Philosophy from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Party and Youth Involvement

On November 18, 1993, Thuong joined the Communist Party of Vietnam. He attended courses at the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, earning a doctorate in Political Theory. In 1992, the year he graduated from university, Thuong was elected Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of his university. In 1993, he became Deputy Head of the Professional University Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union. In October 1996, he was elected to the Standing Committee of the Youth Union and served as Head of the Professional University Committee.

On February 29, 2008, at the 5th Conference of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Federation, Thuong was elected President of the Federation. On January 18, 2011, at the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Thuong was elected a full member of the Central Committee. In August of the same year, he was appointed by the Politburo as Secretary of the Party Committee of Quang Ngai province.

Political Ascent

On January 27, 2016, Thuong was elected to the Politburo, becoming its youngest member at the age of 45. On January 30, 2021, he was elected a full member of the 13th Central Committee. The following day, he became a member of the Politburo and, on February 6, Permanent Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee.

Presidency

On March 2, 2023, the National Assembly passed a resolution electing Vo Van Thuong as President of Vietnam, under the guidance of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
