Aung San Oo: A Prominent Burmese Politician

Early Life and Career

Aung San Oo was a prominent Burmese political figure who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar from 1998 to 2004. Prior to entering politics, he held various positions within the country's military intelligence over a period of two decades.

Diplomatic Service

Oo began his diplomatic career in 1988, serving as Myanmar's Ambassador to Germany until 1995. He subsequently held the position of Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1995 to 1998.

Foreign Minister and Political Career

In 1998, Oo was appointed as Myanmar's Foreign Minister. He was considered a moderate politician and sought to improve relations with the international community. However, his tenure was cut short due to opposition from conservative elements within the government led by Than Shwe.

Arrest and Imprisonment

In October 2005, Oo was arrested and charged with corruption. A special tribunal convicted him in January 2006 and sentenced him to seven years in prison. He died in custody at Insein Prison on November 4, 2009.
