Abd al-Malik I: Samanid Ruler of Khorasan and Transoxiana
Early LifeAbd al-Malik I was a Samanid ruler who governed the regions of Khorasan and Transoxiana. Unfortunately, scant information about his reign has survived.
Political Situation
During Abd al-Malik's tenure, it is uncertain whether he possessed the authority attributed to him by the historian Makdisi. Evidence suggests that true power lay with the Turkic guards who had risen to prominence under his predecessor, Nuh.
Turmoil and Death
A notable incident during Abd al-Malik's reign was the assassination of Bekr ibn Malik, the governor of Khorasan, at the palace gates in Bukhara. His untimely demise came prematurely due to a fatal fall from his horse during a polo match.
Succession
Makdisi records that Abd al-Malik's son, Nasr, ruled for only a single day before being replaced as the Samanid governor.
