Biography of Babrak Karmal

Babrak Karmal was the President of Afghanistan. He was born near Kabul on January 6, 1929. He received his education at Kabul University, where he became acquainted with Marxist ideas. After being imprisoned, he served in the army upon his release. He returned to university to complete his legal education. Karmal was one of the founding members of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) and served as a member of the National Assembly from 1965 to 1973. In 1978, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and later became the ambassador to Czechoslovakia. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, he became the President of the country. In November 1986, he resigned from his position, citing deteriorating health as the reason for his inability to fulfill his duties. He soon relocated to Moscow. Karmal passed away in Moscow on December 3, 1996.
