Hamid Karzai: Early Life and Education

Hamid Karzai was born in 1957 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His family moved to Pakistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979, and Karzai pursued higher education at Himachal University in India.

Resistance to Soviet Occupation

In 1983, Karzai joined the Afghan National Liberation Front (ANLF) and fought against the Soviet occupation. He became a close ally of former Afghan King Zahir Shah.

Post-Soviet Transition

After the fall of the Soviet-backed Najibullah government in 1992, Karzai served as Deputy Foreign Minister in the Islamic State of Afghanistan. He welcomed the Taliban's rise to power in 1996 but later broke ties with them due to their alliance with Pakistan and Arab countries.

Conflict with the Taliban

Karzai's father was killed by unknown assailants in 1999, prompting him to flee to Pakistan and then to the United States. He returned to Afghanistan in 2001 and led the anti-Taliban resistance with the support of the United States.

Interim President of Afghanistan

In 2001, Karzai was appointed Interim President of Afghanistan at the Bonn Conference. He visited Moscow twice during this time to improve diplomatic relations.

First Presidential Term

Karzai was elected President of Afghanistan in 2002. He was re-elected in 2004, promising to end warlordism and drug trafficking and to establish a prosperous Afghanistan.

Knighthood and International Recognition

In 2003, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom knighted Karzai with the Order of the Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George.

Later Years

Karzai served as President of Afghanistan until 2014. He remains an influential figure in Afghan politics and continues to advocate for peace and stability in his country.

Karzai is married to a doctor and has no children. He speaks Dari, Pashto, English, and Urdu fluently.
