Biography of Mohammad Najibullah

Mohammad Najibullah was a political figure and the President of Afghanistan from November 1987 to April 1992. He was born in 1947 in Gardiz, into a Pashtun family. His father was a general in the Afghan army. Najibullah obtained a medical degree from Kabul University in 1975.

Communist Party Membership and Imprisonment

In 1965, Najibullah joined the Communist Party and experienced two periods of imprisonment. After the communist takeover in 1978, he was appointed as an ambassador to Iran. However, he was forced to flee to one of the Eastern European countries shortly after. He remained there until the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.

Return to Afghanistan and Presidency

Upon returning to Afghanistan, Najibullah assumed the position of the head of the intelligence service. In 1986, he became the President of Afghanistan. Even after the withdrawal of Soviet forces in 1989, he managed to hold onto power for three more years. However, in 1992, Najibullah's regime collapsed, and his family sought refuge in India. He spent several years in hiding at the Indian embassy in Kabul and later in the UN mission in Kabul.

Execution by the Taliban

Following the capture of Kabul by the Taliban forces, Najibullah was executed on September 27, 1996.
