Biography of Dieter Haak

Dieter Haak is a German politician who served as the Minister of Construction in Helmut Schmidt's government.

Early Life and Education

Haak studied law at Erlangen and Bonn after graduating from school. He was a member of a student corporation in Erlangen. In 1957, he passed his first state examination, followed by the second examination in 1962. In 1961, Haak defended his dissertation on the topic of "Trust Commission of the Electoral Law of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Bavaria."

Government Career

After completing his studies, Haak worked as a government assessor in the Bavarian civil service under the district captain of Erlangen. In 1963, he moved to the Ministry of Intra-German Relations, where he served until 1969, eventually becoming the Regierungsdirigent (senior civil servant) and head of the Chancellor's Office under Minister Herbert Wehner.

Political Career

Haak joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1961. From 1975 to 1985, he was the deputy chairman of the SPD in Bavaria. In 1964, he became a member of the Kreistag (district council) in the Zig-Kroises district and served as the local chairman of the SPD faction. Haak then became a member of the Bundestag (German federal parliament) and remained in this position until 1990. He was a member of the SPD parliamentary group's executive committee in 1972 and from 1982 to 1990. From 1990 to 1999, he was also a member of the Bavarian Senate.

Ministerial Position

From 1972 to 1978, Haak held the position of Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Construction. On February 16, 1978, as part of a cabinet reshuffle, Haak became the Minister of Regional Planning, Construction, and Urban Development of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Later Career

After Helmut Kohl was elected as Federal Chancellor, Haak resigned from his ministerial position.

Personal Life

Dieter Haak is married and has four children. From 1990 to 2002, he served as the President of the Land Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria. In 2004, he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Erlangen.
