Biography of Khan Khanazar

Khan Khanazar was a strong and determined leader who successfully strengthened and united the fragmented and weakened parts of the Khanate.

Early Life

Khan Khanazar, the son of Kassym Khan and the grandson of Janibek Khan, was born to his mother, the renowned Hana Sultan Khanym, known for her wisdom in the steppe. The earliest mention of Khanazar's name is found in the work of Hasan-bek Rumlu, "Ahsan at-tavarikh," which describes his military clash with the Turkmen in 1548-1549, resulting in his defeat.

Territorial Wars

During the mid-16th century, the Khanate of Kazakhstan faced continuous and often unsuccessful territorial wars with the Mongolistan, the Nogai Horde, and Bukhara. This difficult period highlighted the need for a strong and determined leader who could strengthen and unite the fragmented and weakened parts of the Khanate. Khan Khanazar emerged as such a leader.

Wars and Expansions

In the mid-15th century, the Golden Horde began to disintegrate into several parts, three of which - the Nogai Horde, the Astrakhan, and the Kazan Khanates - were directly related to the period of Kazakh history under consideration. The Nogai Horde, in particular, became one of the influential state formations that emerged from the remnants of the Golden Horde. However, internal power struggles for control over the numerous nomadic masses within the Horde persisted.

In the 1550s, a conflict arose between Yusup Mirza, a supporter of the Crimean Khanate, and his brother Ismail, who favored the Moscow State. The confrontation ended in 1555 with the death of Yusup and his followers. This marked the beginning of the Nogai Horde's dependence on the Moscow Tsars. Some of Yusup's supporters joined forces with Khan Khanazar of Kazakhstan.

In 1569, Khanazar launched an attack on the Nogai Horde. Victorious, the borders of the Kazakh Khanate expanded to the lands between the Edil and Ural rivers. Part of the Bashkir people, who refused to submit to Russian rule, also became part of the Khanate. Additionally, a few years earlier, Khanazar had crushed a Chagatai army. During the years 1555-1558, Khanazar's troops constantly put pressure on the rulers of Tashkent. At the same time, a struggle ensued with the Siberian Khan Shaybanid Kuchum in the northeast of Kazakhstan. In the northeast of Kazakhstan, Khan Khanazar confronted the Kalmyk troops.

Death in Battle

However, one of the most significant and dramatic chapters in Khanazar's life was his war with the Tashkent branch of the Shaybanid dynasty, in which Khanazar and two of his sons perished.
