Irakli Alasania was born on December 21, 1973, in Batumi, Georgia. His father, Mamia Alasania, a Georgian lieutenant general, was executed by Abkhaz forces in 1993. In 1995, Alasania graduated from the International Law Faculty of Tbilisi State University. He is said to have studied at the Security Academy of Georgia and worked in the Georgian Ministry of State Security from 1994 to 1996.
Government Career
Alasania's government career began in 1998 with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served in the CIS and Russian Affairs Departments and at Georgian embassies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In 2001, he headed the State Security Department and became First Deputy Minister of Security in 2002.
After Mikheil Saakashvili came to power in 2004, Alasania became Deputy Minister of Defense and then Deputy Secretary of the Georgian National Security Council. From 2004 to 2006, he chaired the so-called Government of Abkhazia in exile. He was also a Presidential Representative for Georgian-Abkhaz Negotiations and later became an Advisor to the President on Conflict Resolution.
Permanent Representative to the UN
From 2006 to 2008, Alasania served as Georgia's Permanent Representative to the UN. He continued to advocate for negotiations with Abkhazia and visited Sukhumi in May 2008. After the 2008 Russo-Georgian war and Russia's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Alasania called for an interstate coalition to politically counter Russia.
Opposition Leader
In December 2008, Alasania resigned from the UN post and declared himself in opposition to Saakashvili. In February 2009, he led the creation of the "Alliance for Georgia" political bloc with the New Rights and Republican parties.
