József Antall
József Antall was a Hungarian politician who served as Prime Minister of Hungary from 1990 to 1993.
Education and Early Career
Antall was born on April 8, 1932, in Budapest. He graduated from Budapest University with degrees in Hungarian language and literature, history, and archival studies. Antall worked as an archivist at the State Archives and as a teacher at a school. However, he lost his jobs due to his participation in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
After the uprising, Antall worked as a librarian and studied the history of medicine.
Political Career
In the late 1980s, Antall became an activist in the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF), an opposition party to the communist government. He soon rose to leadership of the party.
After the MDF's victory in the 1990 parliamentary elections, Antall became the first Prime Minister of the democratic Hungarian Republic.
Prime Ministership
During his time as Prime Minister, Antall implemented reforms to liberalize Hungary's economy and society.
Death and Legacy
Antall died from cancer on December 12, 1993, while still in office. He is remembered as a key figure in the transition of Hungary to democracy.
