Karl Weick is an American scholar and specialist in organizational processes. He is known for popularizing the terms "loose coupling," "mindfulness," and "sensemaking." He currently holds the position of distinguished professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Karl E. Weick

Born in Warsaw, Indiana, Weick obtained his bachelor's degree from Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio, and his doctoral degree in organizational psychology from Ohio State University. One of the main principles explored in Weick's work is "enactment," which suggests that organizations can be created through the mere discussion of the idea of their creation.

Later, Weick continued his research on the birth and functioning of complex commercial systems. In his 1976 article, "Educational Organizations as Loosely Coupled Systems," he introduced the term "loose coupling" which has since become widely used in the field of organizational process theory.

It is important to note that the term "loose coupling" had been previously examined in other disciplines like information systems theory. However, Weick's contributions made it popular within the context of organizational processes.

Weick argues that organizations are primarily characterized by the weak connection between their theoretical mechanisms and their practical implementation. It is this loose coupling that allows these ontologically incompatible concepts to coexist alongside each other.

Another well-known concept in this field is "sensemaking," which Weick also interpreted in a unique way. He emphasizes how both clients and employees strive to adapt to the organization's activities while the organization itself attempts to adapt to the surrounding world. These processes occur simultaneously and partially overlap.

Weick dedicated a series of scientific works to studying the uncertainties that arise from the interaction between these processes. One of these works focused on the catastrophic fire in Mann Gulch, interpreting the causes and consequences of the fire through the lens of the concept of "sensemaking."
