Early Life and Activism
Kathe Kern, born in Darmstadt, Germany, pursued her education at a local high school and later trained as a commercial employee. Her early political involvement began with the Socialist Workers' Youth association in 1919, followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1920. She held various positions within the SPD, including employee of the Chairman of the Regional Insurance Institution of Hesse and secretary to Otto Zürr at the General Federation of Salaried Employees.
Resistance and Post-War Politics
In 1928, Kern joined the SPD's District Board in Berlin and became head of its women's secretariat. Her political activities led to her arrest in June 1933. Upon her release in July 1933, she worked as a secretary for the Saar Union in Berlin, and later for the Prussian Mining and Metallurgy Corporation. Throughout this period, she maintained connections with underground resistance groups, notably Wilhelm Leuschner's network.
Following World War II, Kern played a key role in the re-establishment of democratic institutions. She joined the SPD's Central Committee in Berlin and became secretary of the party's women's secretariat. She supported the merger of the SPD and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), and was elected to the board of the newly formed Socialist Unity Party (SED). She also joined the Free German Trade Union Federation and the Democratic Women's League of Germany.
Political Career in the GDR
In 1946, Kern was elected to the Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt and served as a member of the first German People's Council in 1948 and 1949. She was elected to the People's Chamber of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1949 and led the Democratic Women's League (DFD) faction from 1957 to 1984. She served as Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health from 1949 to 1970, overseeing the Department of Motherhood.
Legacy
Kathe Kern's political career was marked by her unwavering commitment to social justice and women's rights. She held numerous positions of influence within the GDR, contributing to the development of its healthcare and welfare systems. Upon her death, she was laid to rest at the Socialists' Memorial in Berlin's Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde. Her legacy as an antifascist and stalwart advocate for women's empowerment continues to inspire generations of political activists.
