Mamish Shahbaz oglu Abdullayev: From Accountant to War Hero

Mamish Abdullayev was born in the village of Muradkhany in 1923. Initially, he worked as an accountant in a collective farm after finishing high school.

Call to Arms

In June 1943, Abdullayev enlisted in the Red Army. His bravery in the Battle of Kursk earned him the Order of the Red Star and the Medal "For Courage."

The Battle of Ryn'sk-Ostrov

On September 3, 1944, Sergeant Abdullayev's machine gun fire played a crucial role in breaking through Nazi defenses at Ryn'sk-Ostrov. Outnumbered and ambushed, Soviet forces were forced into a desperate retreat. Seizing the initiative, Abdullayev flanked the enemy and opened fire. His actions cleared the path for a Soviet counteroffensive, resulting in the elimination of 29 enemy soldiers and the capture of significant enemy equipment.

Crossing the Narew

The following day, Abdullayev's machine gun squad led the assault across the Narew River near Dvorsk. Amidst heavy fire, his machine gun was destroyed, and he sustained serious shrapnel injuries. Undeterred, Abdullayev used grenades to neutralize two enemy positions, captured an enemy machine gun, and opened fire on the advancing enemy.

Final Act of Bravery

Returning to his unit after recovering from his wounds, Sergeant Abdullayev was killed in action on January 26, 1945. In recognition of his exceptional courage and sacrifice, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945.
