Early Life
Sami Faysulovich Abdullaev was born into a peasant family in Uzbekistan into an ethnic Uzbek background. He completed seven years of primary education before graduating from the Tashkent Art School.
Military Career
In 1938, Abdullaev enlisted in the Red Army, serving in the infantry. When the Great Patriotic War began in 1941, he actively participated in the conflict. As a commander of a detachment in the 97th Separate Motorized Engineering Battalion, he distinguished himself in the liberation campaigns of the Kuban River and Taman Peninsula in autumn 1943.
On September 16, 1943, near the settlement of Krasny, Abdullaev's detachment detected and removed 97 enemy mines at night, neutralizing 37 of them. This action cleared the path for advancing Soviet tank forces. However, the brigade soon faced another obstacle: a bridge over a river had been blown up by the Nazis.
Abdullaev's detachment, under enemy fire, managed to restore the crossing in just three hours, allowing the tanks to continue their advance. The following day, Abdullaev heroically prevented the detonation of another bridge by cutting a burning fuse from a support pillar. Despite being wounded, he remained on the battlefield.
Between September 16 and October 9, Abdullaev's unit successfully neutralized approximately 3,000 mines of various types, including 39 non-removable mines and 34 surprise mines.
Recognition
On May 16, 1944, Abdullaev's heroism and valor earned him the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He was bestowed the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal (No. 4385).
Post-War Career
After the war, Abdullaev was demobilized at the rank of senior sergeant. He dedicated himself to the arts, becoming the President of the Union of Artists of Uzbekistan for a decade. From 1956 until his passing, he served as Director of the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan.
Legacy
Abdullaev's exceptional contributions to the war effort and art world in Uzbekistan are forever etched in history. He passed away in Tashkent in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and artistic excellence.
