Early Life and Education
Talal bin Abdullah I was born on February 26, 1909, in Mecca, Ottoman Empire. He was the son of Abdullah I bin al-Hussein, King of Jordan, and Musbah bint Nasser. Talal received his education from private tutors before attending the British Army's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He graduated in 1929 with the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Arab Legion's Cavalry Regiment.
Military Career
After graduating from Sandhurst, Talal served in the British Regiment in Jerusalem and the Royal Artillery in Baghdad. He became Crown Prince in 1948 following the assassination of his father, Abdullah I.
Accession to the Throne
Talal became King of Jordan on June 20, 1951, after the assassination of his father. He faced significant challenges during his reign, including social and economic instability.
Constitutional Reforms
Despite his short reign, Talal played a pivotal role in the development of Jordan's modern constitution. Under his leadership, a new constitution was ratified on January 1, 1952, establishing a constitutional monarchy and enshrining the rights and freedoms of Jordanian citizens.
Abdication
Due to concerns about his mental health, Talal abdicated the throne on August 11, 1952, in favor of his 17-year-old son, Hussein.
Personal Life
Talal married his cousin, Zein al-Sharaf Talal, in 1934. They had four sons and two daughters. Their daughter Asma died shortly after birth in 1937, and their son Hussein passed away in 1999. Talal passed away on July 7, 1972, in Istanbul, Turkey.
Military Honors and Legacy
Talal received numerous military honors and ranks, including the honorary rank of Lieutenant in the Transjordan Frontier Force (1932), Honorary Major General (1949), Field Marshal of the Jordanian Arab Army (1951), and the Spanish Grand Cross for Military Merit (White) in 1952. He is descended from the Islamic prophet Muhammad through his father.
