Early Life and Education
Born in Pleven, Bulgaria, Tsetska Tsacheva attended a mathematics-focused high school before pursuing a law degree at Sofia University. Following her graduation, she interned for a year in the Pleven Regional Court.
Legal Career
Tsacheva's professional journey commenced as a lawyer in the Pleven municipality. In 1988, she rose to lead the city's group of attorneys. She subsequently joined the Regional Bar Association in 1992.
Political Leadership
In 2006, Tsacheva became a co-founder of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party, heading its Pleven chapter. Her political career gained momentum in 2007, when she unsuccessfully campaigned for mayor of Pleven but secured a seat on the city council.
Rise to National Prominence
Tsacheva's ascent to national prominence began in 2009 when she was elected Speaker of the National Assembly, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She served in this role for two consecutive terms, from 2009 to 2013 and from 2014 to 2017.
Ministerial Appointment
In 2017, Tsacheva joined the third government of Boyko Borisov as Minister of Justice. Her leadership in this capacity has garnered both praise and criticism.
Presidential Bid
In 2016, GERB nominated Tsacheva as their presidential candidate. She advanced to the second round of the election, garnering 22.0% of the vote. However, she was ultimately defeated by independent candidate Rumen Radev.
Personal Life
Tsetska Tsacheva is married with one son and speaks German and Russian fluently.
