Vladimir Vazov: A Bulgarian Military Commander
Early Life and FamilyVladimir Vazov, a Bulgarian general-lieutenant, was born into a merchant family. His brothers included the writer Ivan Vazov and General Georgi Vazov. He married Mara Goranova and had three sons: Georgi (a chemist), Ivan (a lawyer), and Vladimir (also an officer), who were named after his brothers.
Education and Military Career
After graduating from high school in Plovdiv (1886) and the Military School in Sofia (1887), Vazov completed training in Essen, Germany. He further attended the Artillery School in Tsarskoye Selo, Russia (1903) and pursued a course on rapid-fire guns in France.
From 1888, Vazov served in the 5th Artillery Regiment in Shumen. He later became an adjutant in the 2nd Artillery Regiment (1891) and participated in the commission for the acceptance of new artillery equipment (1893). After commanding a battery in the 5th Artillery Regiment (1893-1896), he held the same role in the 4th Artillery Regiment in Sofia.
In 1904, Vazov played a pivotal role in selecting rapid-fire guns for the Bulgarian artillery and participated in comparative trials in Germany and France. He subsequently commanded a detachment in the 8th Artillery Regiment, served as assistant chief of the newly established Artillery School, and headed the structural and economic division of the Artillery Inspection.
Balkan Wars and World War I
Balkan Wars (1912-1913)During the First and Second Balkan Wars, Vazov commanded the 4th Rapid-Fire Artillery Regiment as part of the 1st Sofia Division. In the First Balkan War, he fought in the victorious Battle of Gechkensli (1912). He went on to participate in the capture of Lüleburgaz and the assault on the fortified Chatalja Line.
In the Second Balkan War, Vazov fought in battles near Tsaribrod, Pirote, Bubljak, Drenoglav, and Gradomane.
World War I (1914-1918)
After the wars, Vazov resumed his position as head of the structural and economic division of the Artillery Inspection. In 1915, he became commander of the 5th Artillery Brigade and participated in the First World War. He suffered a serious wound in November 1915.
In 1916, Vazov commanded the 1st Infantry Brigade of the 5th Infantry Division. He later became commander of the 9th Pleven Infantry Division, replacing General Stefan Nerezov. Under his leadership and with the counsel of his brother, General Georgi Vazov, they established a strong defensive area that successfully repelled British attacks from April to May 1917. For his valor, Vazov was promoted to general-major on May 20, 1917.
Legacy
Vladimir Vazov was a distinguished military commander who played a significant role in the Bulgarian army during the Balkan Wars and World War I. His tactical skills and leadership contributed to the defense of strategic positions and the success of Bulgarian forces.
